Chapter Four
Blessing of Dwelling in His House
Psalms 84: 4a. “Blessed are those who dwell in Your house...”
Truly we are blessed by His presence. There is a specific element of blessing within the opening words of this verse, and refers to the words of David’s song in 65: 4. “Blessed is the man You choose, and cause to approach You, that he may dwell in Your courts.”
As with the Psalmists in the 84th, David uses “esher”, which means “happiness or blessedness”. By interjection, it means, “Oh, the great happiness of”. Similar language with the same usage is found in Psalms 33: 2. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His own inheritance.”
In 4: 3 of David’s song we see a classifying of those He chooses. “But know that the Lord has set apart for Himself him who is Godly…” For His own glory, He seeks those with a genuine heart after the Father. In the same “blessed” language, the Psalmist writes in 1: 1-2, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law (Torah) of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.”
In a passage where John records Yeshua referring to His chosen as “friends”, 15: 16 records Him saying, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain…”
As opposed to the mighty, noble, and wise according to the flesh, Paul tells the Corinthians in 1: 27-28 of the first letter, “But God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen…”
Paul tells the Ephesians in reference to “blessings in heavenly places”, in 1: 4, “He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love…” And, James reasons in 2: 5, “Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promise to those who love Him?”
Peter writes of Messiah in 2: 4 of the first epistle, “Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected in deed by men, but chosen by God and precious…” Then, he includes us with Yeshua in v. 5. “You also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Yeshua, the Messiah…”
In v. 9, Peter says we are “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that (we) may proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
The promised victory of the “chosen” is found in Revelation 17: 14. “These (the wicked) will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called chosen and faithful.”
In all of this, we are as David finishes 65: 4, “…satisfied with the goodness of Your house, of Your holy temple”. For “satisfied”, David chooses “sabea”, which means “sufficient”. Yet, in the depth of definition, and the “bigness” of His goodness, we are more than just filled. We don’t have just enough to suffice. We have plenty. We are filled to satisfaction. We are satiated. We are as David sings in Psalms 23: 5, “(Our) cup runs over”. What a blessed encouragement!!
